You shoot them in the head, or burn them.

Or Y'know that wasp long shot spray that comes in a can, that works well too.

DUH! :D
Reply:Spray T-Rex urine around your yard. Not only will this keep zombies away, but it'll keep other dinosaurs away as well. It worked in Jurassic Park III, so it should work for you, too.
Reply:Put out a bear trap, it will cut off their feet and they can't tramp back in anymore.
Reply:Call Scooby and the gang. They're experienced in this.
Reply:Let me pee in your backyard. That should act as a zombie deterrent.
Reply:Get a shotgun, and blow their brains out. It always works in the movies. Or you could burn them, that would be cool.
Reply:Sing to them.. The caterwalling should drive them away.. Or pee in you're neighbors yard and the smell will attract them there if not then at least you can get a little relief...

If God's answers to prayer are either "yes," "no," or "wait," what makes God relevant?

I could say I get the same answers when I pray to my begonias and hyacinths.

Why are not such prayers simple reflections of naive superstitions?

If God's answers to prayer are either "yes," "no," or "wait," what makes God relevant?
Does that mean my magic 8 ball is God?
Reply:He is sovereign and almighty and holy...

We are not.

In the sermon on the mount, Jesus said "and when you pray"...

He didn't say, "and if you pray..."

Prayer is a command......it's also a priviledge
Reply:I wonder how he answers more complex questions.

God what is the square root of 14?
Reply:Heck, you get those same answers with Magic 8 ball.

SNIPED AGAIN. I swear it's not my day! *high five to bettie and Triforce*
Reply:Actually, there are only two answers to prayer: yes, and "I've got a better idea."

God is relevant in that you have a sustaining relationship with Him. And even if the only miracle He had ever performed was the resurrection of Jesus Christ, that in itself was an enormous gift of hope to all mankind.
Reply:The answers god gives are no proof for the existance of god.

The only answers from god that would be relevant would be the answer to the question, "How should we cure cancer and starvation around the world?" I'm waiting for the booming voice in the thunder to give me a scientific formula. Still waiting.

Hasn't happened yet and yet the Bible says, "If you ask anything..." Apparently that verse isn't any more relevant than the existance of a god who answers prayer.
Reply:That is exactly how I answer prayers to me. So you minus well dump praying to god and pray to me. At least I exist.

Just say,

Our Grim Jack, who art at his desk, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is just down the hall a bit. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from mindlessness. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever, or at least until next Tuesday. Amen.
Reply:you could say you get the same answers but of course you'd be lieing......or in need of immediate mental evaluation...or both....God is God.....what amazes me is that He loves even people like you...those who doubt %26amp; question Him, who doudt His very existence....but He still loves you and wants you to love Him..and nothing you can do can change His thinking about you....bet you dont know many people like that....like none, not even your own mother....God is the perfect Father to all of us....leading, guiding, correcting and blessing all of us, right when we need it. It's obvious you have never had prayer answered.....because when you do, you will never question Him again.....give it a shot..what you got to loose?...oh yeah, eternal life is what you have to loose...dont wait too long.. God Bless

Reply:When my child asks me for a pair of scissors, I will not give it to her because they can be dangerous to a child. I understand some risks that my child does not. In the same way God does not give us all we ask. He is not a magic goose, or a genie in a bottle, but a Father who loves us.

I have had many prayers answered by God, not necessarily the way I wanted them answered, but looking back, the way that was best for me.

God is apparently not relevant to you, so yes, the begonias seem like a good choice. ; )
Reply:You're better off asking the 8-ball. It has more than 3 answers.
Reply:I aswered this in your last question, but I think that prayer connects you to elevated spirits that can come closer to you and help you. Prayer is energy deliberated from your heart. Good spirits get attracted to that energy, and bad spirits get away from it. When you pray you become a magnet that attract good spirits to interact with you. But if you decide to pray to your begonias and hyacinths, if you are being sincere, the good spirits will get to you anyway, and hopefully show you, through inspiring thoughts if the begonias and hyacinths are listening or not.

Peace!
Reply:I certainly agree with Primoa19 this time.

God is the almighty. He does not have to answer to us for anything at all. We receive rain, sunshine, vegetaion, etc. all because of his graciousness. We have no right to question him whatsoever!
Reply:hes not
Reply:well, if he says "Yes" that's surely relevant.
Reply:Have you heard GOD answer YES,NO or WAIT to any questions, and if your plants talk to you,you need a psychiatrist.God is relevent in many ways in somepeoples lives, but you must want HIM there.God is very relevent in church, activities or funtions of the church and in our lives.

WE make GOD RELEVENT because we want to.

If you're something of a Deadhead, what is your favorite Grateful Dead song?

♥My best friend just brought me a CD with 70 minutes worth of different recordings of Scarlet Begonias - I am so loving it right now!♥

If you're something of a Deadhead, what is your favorite Grateful Dead song?
I'll give you a clue...

She had rings on her fingers and bells on her shoes

'Sing Me Back Home'

'Sugar Magnolia'

'Uncle John's Band'

'Dire Wolf' (silly %26amp; fun)

Does covering up your outdoor potted plants with plastic tarp prevent them from dying in a hard freeze?

I have hibiscus and begonias and it is getting down into the teens at night. Will they survive with plastic tarp over them?

Does covering up your outdoor potted plants with plastic tarp prevent them from dying in a hard freeze?
They likely will not survive if the temperature gets to the teens unless they are in a "microclimate" which is protected from the low temperature and allows the heat left in the ground to stay trapped.

A tarp is better than nothing. If there is any way to bring the plant into a more sheltered area that would be best, otherwise covering it with both a blanket, followed by a tarp would be better. The blanket would help keep in the heat and the tarp would keep help keep the wind from getting in.
Reply:I don"t know where you live, but begonias get dug up and dried or protected in a frost free place in the winter where I live. Some hibiscus are hardy (and withstand real winters) and some can be a houseplant in the winter. If the pots are covered they will not get water, so give them a little bit. The best thing would be to protect both of them from frost, they may survive. Another tip for overwintering things that are hardy is to have plenty of soil around the roots. They have more insulation.
Reply:they will survive a hard freeze without any cover. they just grow back out from the roots every year. plastic is not good to cover with use cardboard if you want to prevent freezing.
Reply:Hi, i suggest a great site with plenty of Issues related to your home and garden and everything around it. it also provide clear and accurate answer to many common questions.

http://garden.sitesled.com/

I am sure that you can get your answers in this website.

Good Luck and Best Wishes!
Reply:if you live in a semitropical climate like south georgia and florida like id o, the best thing is to use plain bed sheets and wrap the plants up. as long as your freezes are just for a nigh or two. the ground warmth will keep them living fior such short freezes. we will be having these in Savannah tommorrow, so i saw people out today wrapping their plants with sheets.
Reply:Begonias will not survive a severe freeze, below 20 degrees. You could mulch heavily and might save the roots. If your hibiscus is a tropical variety, bring it inside, or it will be dead.
Reply:it will help but if they are potted it would be better to bring them in to an enclosed area. another way to protect them is to apply a fine mist of water and allow it to freeze on the plant like they do to the orange groves in Florida when the temperature goes down.

ANY Sublime fans? If so what are some of your favorite songs?

Mine hard to decide but maybe Scarlet Begonias, Under my Voodoo, Saw Red, Pool shark Hard to live

Which annuals are slug resistant?

I've found slugs will avoid Begonias and Osteospermum. Has anyone had luck with any other annuals and/or herbs?

Which annuals are slug resistant?
Slugs attack all my flowers and plants. I also use beer in lids at night. I do it for a week straight about once a month and it helps.
Reply:slugs are drawn to plants by smell,so this is a tuff question to answer.the site below will help somewhat.
Reply:The only thing I have personally found to keep slugs at bay is a couple of jar lids full of beer set out at various intervals between the plants which is more invirmentally safe than using chemicals to keep them at bay.
Reply:Slug resistant plants- begonias, Calf. poppy, fuchsias, geraniums, impatiens, lantana, nasturtiums, purple rob cup

Can someone explain this quote?

There is nothing so agreeable as to put oneself out for a person who is worths one's while. For the best of us, the study of the arts, a taste for old things, collections, gardens, are all mere ersatz surrogates, alibis. From the depths of our tub, like Diogenes, we cry out for a man. We cultivate begonias, we trim yews, as a last resort, because yews and begonias submit to treatment. But we should prefer to give our time to a plant of human growth, if we were sure that he was worth the trouble. That is the whole question. You must know yourself a little. Are you worth my trouble or not?

M. de Charlus in "The Guermantes Way"

Prost

Can someone explain this quote?
I would have to say that this quote is talking about the relationships we have with others. If we deem someone worth our time and we invest in them, we will see something for our efforts. A relationship evolves from the effort we have put forth. Plants, trees, hobbies etc. are investments of our time in which we can control the outcome. We can't do that with people. Therefore we are more cautious in getting involved with people because we don't know what the outcome will be. We must know ourselves well enough to decide whether the risk of cultivating personal relationships is worth the effort.
Reply:Hes talking about sp3 hybridization, although in a very incospicuous way.

Problem is, however, that Hybridisation theory has failed in a few aspects, notably in explaining the energy considerations for the involvement of d-orbitals in chemical bonding (See above for sp3d and sp3d2 hybridisation). This can be well-explained by means of an example. Consider, for instance, how the theory in question accounts for the bonding in phosphorus pentachloride (PCl5). d-orbitals are large, comparatively distant from the nucleus and high in energy.

Radial distances of orbitals from the nucleus seem to reveal that d-orbitals are way too high in energy to 'mix' with s- and p-orbitals. 3s - 0.47 , 3p - 0.55, 3d - 2.4 (in angstroms). Thus, at first sight, it seems improbable for sp3d hybridisation to occur.
Reply:It means approximately the same thing as that there is no greater happiness than to cultivate true love.

It means that of all the hobbies you can have, a hobby of loving the right person brings the greatest rewards. But that you have to know if it's really the right person.
Reply:He is saying the best thing is to help someone who is worth helping. We spend our time on on substitutes like the arts, colletcions, gardens ect., because things like plants always respond to our working with them in a positive way when humans may not--humans may reject us or fail us. They may not be worth the time and trouble.

Will a voile curtain provide enough shade in a south facing window to protect plants from midday sun in summer
It should ... East or West exposure would be much stronger... and, in UK, you may not get as much sun anyways, as I see in Texas......
Reply:I would move the plants to either side of the windows out of the direct rays. That is a pretty sheer curtain.

An "excuse" of a poem?
Loved it.....in particular the line - Dive-bombing-robin avoiding.

What are your robins made of in the USA? I've asked this before but no one told me. Ours work alone, are tiny and cheeky and very lovable - they come up and watch you digging and then give you a song, and take a worm as payment. I love Robins (if my last baby had been a boy he was going to be called Robin (I bet Laura is awfully glad she turned out to be a girl)
Reply:Dear Lt. Or should I say Colonel? Or maybe Lt Colonel?

Missing in action is entirely different than dereliction of duties. A flowering flower needs much attention and to go dry for a day is unacceptable and does not fit any standards of conduct either in the gardern or at Dairy Queen. Do I make myself clear? DQ'd that excuse. Write on.
Reply:Splenderific!!!!! This one really sits high on my list!!! As a fellow gardener and an Army Vet I really got into this one. You have taken two polar opposites, gardening and the military and written quite a ditty about the two. Not too many people can do that successfully!!! This one truly shines!!! Your talent amazes me!!! Of course, I already know, it runs in the family (Oh, I know splenderfic is not a word, I cannot write poems so I made up a word instead!!!!)

My new "poem" about New Year's dreams of FORCED resolutions and things gone away?

I was dreaming my bed was on fire

Woke up with an unlit cigarette clenched in my teeth

Happy Feckin new year everybody

Why oh why did I decide to quit

I was dreaming about a big fat spleef

Hiking through trails talking to trees

Woke up with my potted begonia in the bed next to me

Quitting is for quitters or so it may seem

Dreamed I was a monk in a beautiful temple

Surrounded by gorgeous half naked nuns

I was shocked awake by stupid alarm clock

Singing "son you know you can’t get none"

Dreams of cows and sheep in a pasture

BBQ racks strapped to their feet

Woke up remembering doctor’s orders

Against the consumption of delicious red meat

Dreaming of worms in the golden sunshine

Swimming around so happy and free

Woke up and thought to myself WTF?

I don’t even like to drink

Got up, smoked my corncob of flavored tobacco

Savoring but not inhaling the smoke

Thought where the hell did all my little pleasures go

Thank god I still have my diet Coke..

Need help with bulbs?

I have a flower bed that currently contains Petunia's, Gerbera Daisies, and Begonia's. I would love to plant some tulip bulbs there so they will bloom in the spring. Will the plants that are already there (the flowers) die and not come back, should I yank them out or trim them way down. I want to plant the bulbs in the same bed, I do have the room. Also, when should I plant the bulbs so they will bloom in spring? Any advice is very helpful. Thanks. Oh, I am in Ohio.

Need help with bulbs?
The flowers that are in your bed now will not come back in the spring. You can pull them out, add some good bulb fertilizer to the soil and get the bulbs in the ground asap. If you want to, you can also plant a few crocus bulbs in front of the tulips. The crocus are very short and are the first bulbs to bloom in the spring. The tulips will come up right after them. :)
Reply:The Petunias and Begonias do not come back, the Gerber Daisy's may. Plant the bulbs in the Fall before the first freeze. I read in a gardening if you have problems with Rabbits, after you plant the bulbs cover with soil and place some chicken wire over the soil and cover with mulch. Remove chicken wire in the Spring before they start to bloom. One thought to keep in mind all flower beds should to be cleaned. Annuals cleaned out root and all, Perennials cut back to the soil after first freeze. There is a website that you can get beautiful Tulip bulbs it's called Color Blends. A friend of mine purchased some from there and when they came up in the Spring they were spectacular. Good Luck
Reply:No these are just annual plants they are not perenials so they will not grow back.

For the tulips try this site. Depends on what zone you are in.

http://www.tulipbulbdelivery.com/plantin...

Good Luck
Reply:Get them in the ground soon. Your other stuff is all annuals and will die off over the winter anyway, but you don't need to worry about cleaning them out until the spring, unless you want to. We've already starting putting pansies in to replace all the summer annuals.

All of them can go over top of tulips and/or daffodilas.

All those plants are annuals in Ohio. They'll all die. Pull them out and compost them. Plant your bulbs NOW for spring bloom. You can't do it after the ground freezes.
Reply:Depending on your zone, the Gerberas should come back, possibly the petunias if they are perennials. Begonias will not survive a frost, but you can dig them up and/or take cutting to root in water and overwinter in your house.

Most people plant bulbs in the fall or early spring. I leave mine in the ground year round - zone 8.

Is it wise to plant an apple tree among my 5' x 10' flower bed?

Actually, I've already planted it. (tee hee) I don't have much gardening experience- so I wonder, is it okay? It would be surrounded by flowers, such as lantana perrenials. impatiens, Alyssum, Begonia- pretty much most of the annuals. Is there anything I shouldn't be planting by the tree?? Thanks a lot!!

Is it wise to plant an apple tree among my 5' x 10' flower bed?
Ya dun gud gurl. It will benefit from the love and care the flowers get. One thing though, it will grow and make shade and a new home for more and more shade loving plants. Another thing to remember are the apples, when they fall from the tree they can raise heck with thin skinned plants, almost like large hail; but you have years to work it out. Rscott
Reply:I wouldn't. Once it gets bigger and starts dropping apples, not very much will grow under it.

But whatever floats your boat. That's the beauty of gardening, one person's garden oasis is another's jungle from hell.

Question about pruning plants?

I decided to go ahead an prune my begonia plant but I'm not sure how to go about doing it! It has a few single flowers on the ends of some long stems, that are the ones I want to prune, but should I cut the ones that have flowers growing on them?

The stems that I want to cut also seem really thick and I feel like I will be cutting off most of the plant and that it will have a hard time growing back. Should I just go ahead and trim what sticks out a lot?

This is my first time, and I'm really unsure what to do!

Thanks

Question about pruning plants?
You can pretty much prune them whenever they need it, they are so hearty! Take the cuttings and stick them in the dirt, you can have some extras for yourself or as pass alongs!

Science: Chlorophyll Pigments?

For a science lab, we had to find the different pigments of chlorophyll in a Begonia plant. From these results we had to calculate the Rf-values. Now, we are expected to label each pigment according to the corresponding values (ie. in comparison an Rf-value of .96 is carotene). Do you know any good tables? I've got six figures to work with that are fairly close in range. Please help, i'd greatly appreciate it.

Science: Chlorophyll Pigments?
you pose an interesting question but I can not help you I would think you could search for it online search.yahoo.com etc.... I also want to take a minute and ask what is the meaning of life?

What flowers can I plant outside that doesn't attract stinging bees, just bumble bees??

Begonia's attract bumble bees and I am trying to find out what other colorful annual that will be safe to plant since my boyfriend can die from a bee sting.

What flowers can I plant outside that doesn't attract stinging bees, just bumble bees??
I don't know which flowers are less attractive to bees, but I do know that bumblebees sting just like honeybees. You should probably have an epi-pen (which administers the antidote for an anaphylactic/allergic reaction) at your house in case your boyfriend gets stung.
Reply:Bumblebees ARE stinging bees. They deliver a nasty wallop.
Reply:Try astilbes they are georgous ..or any flower without fragrance......fritillaria ...marigolds...alliums......
Reply:Bumble bees sting, but don't take my word for it, next time you see one, tickle its butt.

All flowers attract nectar loving insects. The same flowers that attract butterfly's will also attract bees.

How do I keep my cats from chewing up my house plants?

I've got a variety of house plants place sporadically throughout my house, but where ever they are, my cats find them and chew them all up! I don't want to put them out side, but they won't stop! I've tried the squirt bottle, but they do it alot at night. I can't keep track of them 24-7! The younger one also has dug up my begonia plant so many times that it's now dead, spilling dirt all over my floors and bookshelf. HELP!!

And killing the cats is NOT an option for the cat haters out there

How do I keep my cats from chewing up my house plants?
Hi Kathy...consider rubbing dried catnip and sprinkling them onto the cat greens and see if this will entice the cats to take interest. To safely discourage your cats from eating the other plants consider using a pet-friendly spray deterrent called Grannick's Bitter Apple® http://www.grannicks.com found worldwide at most pet stores.

Please avoid using mothballs. They are considered toxic and should NOT be used. Here's more information on this:

http://www.cvm.uiuc.edu/ope/enotes/showa...

MOTHBALLS are toxic to cats which contains the ingredient Naphthalene. Mothballs are approximately twice as toxic as paradichlorobenzene, and cats are especially sensitive to naphthalene. Signs of ingestion of naphthalene mothballs include emesis, weakness, lethargy, brown-colored mucous membranes and collapses. Paradichlorobenzene mothballs may cause GI upset, ataxia, disorientation, and depression. Elevations in liver serum biochemical values may occur within 72 hours of indigestion.
Reply:..lol!!!..i have the same problem.!!!....my cat makes me sooo mad when she does that...but, ....my solution was that i take my plants to my workplace in the winter (i dont have that many)...and in the summer, i take them home and put them outside....
Reply:I ALWAYS GOT TOLD TO PUT PEPPER ROUND THE PLANT POTS! CATS HATE IT!

MITE MAKE YOU SNEEZ MIND!
Reply:I had to let the plants go, even though I loved them. I tried spraying bitter apple on the plants, squirted the cats with water, nothing helped. It's fun for them. Don't use pepper spray or anything though. My vet said that it can get in their eyes.
Reply:buy the cat a cat-nip plant and set it next to the other ones so it goes for the cat-nip instead of the others
Reply:There is actually a plant out there that cats can and should get into. I forget what it's called, but it's good for cats and I believe that if you get one of those they should leave the others alone. You might have to do a google search for it, or call a pet shop.

Do you have the plants somewhere where it's breezy? Is it possible that the heat/AC vents are blowing air onto them making the leaves blow and making them more attractive to the cats to play with?
Reply:There is stuff at the pet store called: Keep off! or something. It is safe and non-toxic. Spray it on stuff you don't want them bothering.
Reply:You can try aluminum foil, but your cat sounds just as stubborn as my boy cat and he will eat the foil.

You can get some sour apple spray from the pet store (it lasts for a couple of days) so you have to respray it.

What we had finally resorted to doing is hanging the plants from the ceilling. Also bought a couple of nice shelves (with invisible brackets) to put plants on as well in a place the the cats couldn't jump on something to get on the shelves.
Reply:Why don't you buy the Chia pets plants and they will leave all of your house objects alone...
Reply:Buy some hot pepper spray solution. It's available at a pet store. Once they taste that hot pepper spray on their tongues, they'll stop.
Reply:try sprinkling cayenne pepper on and around the plants cats hate the taste and smell it worked for me good luck
Reply:Just a simple solution....Give them food on time :)
Reply:Orange. Orange in the squirt bottles. Orange peels around the base of the plants.

They hate the orange. I think lemons work too. Our cats used to do it all the time and now they don't after using the lemons. Also put some cactus's around. They got "bit" back too.

There's also a repellant you can use:
Reply:Well there are products to help with animals going into places where you don't want them to go, such as Boundry. There is also sonic and spritzer products that do the same thing as the squirt bottle however they have sensors so you don't need to stand there 24/7. As far as the chewing thing goes, this is common. Animals eat plants for two reasons, one to get more nutrition and second is when they feel sick. Normally a rough blade is for the latter. I recommend getting Kitty Grass it's a combination of grasses to suit their needs. Try also feeding a healthier food. You can e-mail me if you need advice on the food.
Reply:To stop your cats from digging in the dirt around your houseplants, go to the craft store or even k-Mart and buy a few pieces of that plastic needlepoint mesh. Cut it to fit the pot, and make a slit and a small opening for the plant. Place it on top of the dirt.

Or, sprinkle a tissue or paper towel with oil of cloves, then place in the pot .

Cloves, lemon, orange, cayenne - cats usually hate them all.

But then go out and buy those "bad little guys" lots of toys, and scatter them throughout the house. A cat would much rather be chasing a "mousie" then chewing your plants.

I always have a shallow pot with grass growing in it for my cats to nibble on, and some catnip as well.
Reply:I'm glad you don't want to kill them because that's mean but my parents have a cat who likes to chew on their house plants. There's not much you can do because like you said you can't keep track of them 24-7 and they do it when your asleep or not at home. All I can say is you might have to put the plants outside so they'll stop or just keep getting on to them when you see them do it.
Reply:It sounds as though you need to rid yourself of your cats.

Killing isn't the only way to do that. Utilize SPCA services.

Sorry you are haveing the problem. But pets who are pests should not be important enough to make their owners' lives hectic. Good luck.
Reply:plant a small lawn inside for them, and some catnip

they will prefer those
Reply:put some tabasco sauce with some water and spray by the plant. Cats hate that
Reply:Put the plants up.Plants are very toxic to pets. There may be something you can use like a natural remedy but I dont know what it is.Like a herb or something in the dirt to discourage them Good luck.
Reply:GIVE THEM SOME GRASS
Reply:Might sound weird, but how about buying some giant venus flytraps like the one that appeared in Little Shop of Horrors. The first cat that tries to chew one will be eaten, and the rest of your cats will learn to stay away.

Sorry about that. Try Bitter Apple (link below).
Reply:well, its quite simple, they need something to chew or gnaw on, get them: a) scratching post or b) catnip toy (make sure its REAL catnip)

my cat Hunter had the same problem, she would eat our plants and bring mice IN THE HOUSE while they were ALIVE. we got her a catnip ball and sheeeeeeeeeeeBAM all cured. try it =D

hope it helps

Reply:There are some sprays you can buy at almost any super store (wal mart and what not). They aren't very expensive.

It is basically a training aid. The odor isn't appealing at all to the animal but in no way harms them. (I have had MANY MANY cats, they are my favorite animal). You can only smell it a little bit and the aroma doesn't spread around the house like an air freshener does.

We use this to spray around the Christmas tree...so I have found out that it doesn't harm the plant either.

You just spray it around the areas you don't want them to go and it really works actually. I believe it's called something like Pet Training Aid...but don't hold me to that.

Also, there is something called a scat mat but, I'm not sure how many areas you have plants in. If it is just one general area then this would work...I have it on the attatched link. It's called a scat mat.

Hope you find something that works!
Reply:Spray the plants with something that the cats hate, like a strong odor.
Reply:they have jo jo echo boxes that scare cats away when they get close to the plants.

Answer 3 ) Pyrrosia piloselloides= Dragon's scale is a Non-Flowering fern ( Family Polypodiaceae )

Polypodiaceae is a family of polypod ferns, which includes more than 60 genera divided into several tribes and containing around 1,000 species. Nearly all are epiphytes, but some are terrestrial. Drynariaceae, Grammitidaceae, Gymnogrammitidaceae, Loxogrammaceae, Platyceriaceae and Pleurisoriopsidaceae are nowadays usually included in the Polypodiaceae.

Their stems range from erect to long-creeping. The fronds are entire, pinnatifid, or variously forked or pinnate. The petioles lack stipules. The scaly rhizomes are generally creeping in nature.

Polypodiaceae species are found in wet climates, most commonly in rain forests. Notable examples include:

Glads usually bloom anywhere from 60 - 100 days after planting depending on location. Southern Cal should be on the shorter side of that.

Caladium is showy starting in July. (Callidium is an insect)

Begonias depends on which kind you have. Tuberous Begonias bloom in early Summer (June or thereabouts)

New to gardening, which way up does the bulb go.?

I have bougt some Begonia bulbs, they have one or two fleshy shoots on them, are these the future stems or the roots. If they are the stems do i cover the whole bulb with soil or do i leave that fleshy bit sticking out.Thank you in advance.

New to gardening, which way up does the bulb go.?
Nearly every bulb has a sort of tapered part to it, and these are always pointed up, although in reality, you could just toss the bulb in a hole and the stems will break through. YES, the bulb needs to be covered with soil, and are usually planted at least 2 - 3" deep, normally there are specific planting instructions on the package, if in doubt contact a local Nursery, they will be happy to help out. It is also wise to put a bit of fertilizer at the bottom of your hole, Miracle Gro for flowers will do a decent job, just add a teaspoon or so before planting. It will give your plants an extra little boost.
Reply:Cover the entire bulb with soil...the point on the bulb faces up, the semi flattened part of the bulb goes down. Sometimes you can see the beginnings of roots coming out of the root portion, and the beginnings of a stem coming out of the point, but not always.
Reply:it goes ijn the light socket ha ha .

no seriously the bulbs generasly are tapperd so the fatter end goes in the soil.see packet for how deep.

new shoots are always out of the soil.

good luck and good choice ive gotr some myself.

HAPPY GARDENING
Reply:Plant all bulbs pointy bit up! Fleshy bits are the roots. Cover the whole lot with a little bit of soil, about 1cm, and water them well.
Reply:the fat/flat side of the bulb goes down. The pointed end is the top and goes up.
Reply:Roots down!! Yes fleshy stems are future stems. Cover whole bulb about 11/2 inches deep.
Reply:roots always go down

I just did something really stupid, do you think I just killed it?

I just had a little bit of coffee left in a coffee cup. I had my watering in other had because I noticed my begonia plant was little dry. Stupid me I just ended up pouring some coffee in the plant and not the water. I was'nt a whole lot of coffee but the plant did soak it up right away. Do you think I just killed my plant? Please no rude answers!!! Thank you

I just did something really stupid, do you think I just killed it?
Coffee grounds are good for plants. So I doubt it.
Reply:its fine i've been in buisness for 5yrs trust me
Reply:wow that's funny! sounds like something I might do.... haha. yea neways no I don't think you killed it, I mean you said it wasn't very much coffee... just pour in some water now :)
Reply:Many people use coffee or coffee grounds on plants, particularly in the winter or if they look a little lethargic.

Scratching coffee grounds into the top of soil after transplanting or if a plant has become scraggy looking is recommended. Denise http://thegardenersrake.com
Reply:Don't be worried.

Since it was just a little I would make sure to also add enough water to the plant so that it is well-watered.

Just keep an eye on it.

I presume since it was the end of your cup that it wasn't hot but maybe only warm or even cool. I would be a little more concerned of any cream/milk or sugar but again not too worried as long as you also add enough water to dilute this.

Another thing of interest is that coffee grounds are oftenh used to mulch some plants. Granted, it is best for plants that need an acidic environment but even so , coffee should not kill your plant!!l
Reply:nawww...but if the plant starts growing "suddenly", then you've discovered a new plant food (I'll take 10 percent).
Reply:no....you haven't done anything to the plant....lots of people use coffee grounds in the plants soil, so i know your plant will be all right. happy growing!!!!!
Reply:Actually I think you just fed it. Coffee grounds are good for the soil and I don't think any damage was done.
Reply:No. It will be fine.
Reply:When in doubt take cuttings and root them in water.
Reply:Coffee is actually a stimulant for plants, no, won't bother it.
Reply:Your plant is OK.

Coffee is an organic substance that won't harm any plant.
Reply:We use coffee grounds for all our plants and it rarely devoid of liquid and they all do great. So I don't believe you've harmed it.
Reply:Coffee tends to be a little acidic, so just water it real good to flush out the coffee. But the plant should be fine.
Reply:no its like a fertilizer to the plant once a month is fine,
Reply:No! Coffee is good for them.
Reply:It would have had worse in a natural environment. You probably just made it very alert.
Reply:no you didn't kill it.I had put a little beer in my plants b4.just put water.:)
Reply:Nah....I think it will be fine. Plants are survivors!
Reply:nope its just gonna get hyper lol
Reply:No, the acid might help the blooms, but I'd rinse the coffee through with room temperature water anyway. Just run water into the plant and let it drain thoroughly. If you had milk or sugar in the coffee, rinsing the soil is very important so you can leach anything out that may harm the plant.
Reply:You're fine. Add enough water to make it drain out a bit, no worries.
Reply:No not at all. Starbucks actually gives away there coffee grinds to put on your plants!
Reply:lol awww dnt worri dnt tink it will die.. but at least u didnt kill a human.. i shud call the plant police on u.. u get 2minz in jail for dat... but no u aint killed it unless its in a very weak condition already
Reply:poor plenty of water in it and lift it from the ground so that the water will fall down before it will get absorved.in other words, you can wash it!but only if the specific plant loves plenty of water.if it is a cactus for example, don't do it...
Reply:no. I am sure nothing will happen to your plant,my sis used to put left over tea leaf thingy in our money plant lol
Reply:I did an experiment in high school where I compared the results of plants that I watered with water, coffee, and Mountain Dew. The plant I watered with coffee did the best. The plant I watered with Mountain Dew did the worst. I was measuring growth and overall plant healthiness.
Reply:No. If it was constantly grown in coffee water, it might be bad.

Your plant should be fine unless it's one of these hypersensitive ones that hate the slightest change in anything.
Reply:it won be affected..

jus a change for it instead of water..!!:D
Reply:You'll end up growing cafe beans ,LoL

Are glow lights worth it?

I am new to planting, and would like to know if their is a more cost effiant lights then glow lights. *Just so you know this is not for weed*

I heard floursant lights work well, but is there a voltage that works best, or is a standered light bulb okay.

Just so you know I am trying to grow, If you have any tips on any of these plants it would be great.

Fittonia-mini white

Begonia: Escargot- Rex

Dionaea: Dente Venus, Red dragon(venus fly trap)

Patchouli Plant

Gynura: Purple passion

Passiflora: Incense

Are glow lights worth it?
For mature plants the grow lights are worth the money. You can use standard fluorescent tubes for starting seedlings indoors, but to grow your plants farther they won’t get the wider spectrum of light they require. That is when you need tubes that are designed to promote plant growth.

Vegetables or foliage plants grow best in blue spectrum

light, which is a cooler form of light. Metal Halide lights are the most popular form of blue spectrum lighting.

Flowering plants grow best in red-orange grow light. The best type of red-orange light is the high pressure sodium light (HPS).

Other bulbs are HID, Mercury Vapor, and LED bulbs. High Intensity Discharge (HID) do just what the name says. they have more intense light. Just like the light at noon is stronger than the light in the evening. The bulb is more intense with the same wattage.

Reply:all bulbs emitted different frequencies of the visible light spectrum... that's why some emit a red/orange light like high pressure sodium and incandescent bulbs, some emit a bluish white light like metal halide, mercury vapor and cool white fluorescent bulbs..... plants grow best with the light spectrum that the sun emits, some house plants do not like direct sunlight

blue /white lights are a bit like the sun at high noon or spring which promote vegetative growth, red/orange lights are a bit like the sun at dawn or fall ... and all plants are different and flowers bloom at different times of the year... trial and error, move the plants around and try different things and see how the plants react... and a fresh soil change every year or two helps.

... look for a "full spectrum " bulbs meant for plants ....

Which bulbs can i grow in my shady garden in this season .And where can i find them.I have very shady patio which doesnt get much light.Where can I find the bulbs. Please let me know options other than begonia and cyclamen

Which bulbs can I grow in my shady garden and where can i find them?
hostas, bleeding hearts, lamium, ferns, periwinkle, begonias, blue bells, merry bells, hydrangeas, astilbe, foam flowers, primrose, Jacobs ladder, lily of the valley... ;)

You can get them at local nurseries, hardware stores or on line at place like Michigan bulb…
Reply:If the shade is from deciduous trees, I would recommend spring-flowering bulbs such as daffodills, crocuses, snowdrops, tulips, hyacinths. They will complete their cycle before the trees are fully leafed out. They need to be planted in autumn. The bulbs should be available at that time in garden centers.
Reply:Hello,

Michigan bulb co has a beautiful assortment of bulbs for all types of weather and zones.

Take a look.....

Reply:Most seed catalogs have bulbs called toad lillies. They range from bizarre to spectacular. The need shade and moist soil.
Reply:www.burpee.com they have a whole section on shady gardens.
Reply:OK, you say nothing about your zone, whether you want perennials in the ground , or potted plants on the patio, so I guess we are wide open here. Most of what you are looking for may actually be rhizomes or tubers rather than true bulbs.

Caladiums are a favorite here even though they do not winter over, lots of choices in leaf color and pattern. Cut the flowers off if they develop.

Hostas are terrific for leaves (and blooms) and are winter hardy in much of the US.

Astillbes offer height and flowers and are also hardy.

Although daylillies should have some sun, some will tolerate more than a 1/2 day shade and still bloom well.

Please keep in mind that most bulbs don't have a season long bloom period. I think you might be pleased with the longer lasting effect of the interesting leaves of caladiums and Hostas. The variety is tremendous. They are easily found in dormant form (bare root) or as potted plants for spring planting in garden sections or by catalog order. Common forms are fairly cheap and can go up to collector prices easily.

There are others, bergenia, foxglove, ladys slipper, lily of the valley, to name a few that tolerate alot of shade.

Google shade gardensfor more ideas and sources.

Can you trim back Joseph's Coat?

The joseph's coat I planted around the border of my flower bed is so big that you can't see my begonia's. Can it be trimmed like you would a hedge?

Can you trim back Joseph's Coat?
Use rose pruning techniques if you expect to get good blooms. Using hedge pruning technique will give you occasional roses.

Why don't you transplant them at the appropriate time (spring in cold winter areas -- fall in mild winter areas) so that the taller roses are in the back and the short begonias are in front?
Reply:yes they can be pruned back.and a hard pruning will only help them.but as stated you should transplant to a better area so as not to run into the same problem next year.

Please help me with my math homework.?

I'm having a brain-fart. D; I can't remember how to do this kind of stuff. Help please?

Find the number of combinations.

1. Ways to choose 4 different flowers from the following kinds: rose, tulip, daisy, petunia, sunflower, begonia, lilac, orchid

2. Ways to choose 6 different baseball cards from 25 baseball cards

3. Ways to choose 5 different magazines from 34 magazines

Please help me with my math homework.?
1. 8*7*6*5

2. 25*24*23*22*21*20

3. 34*33*32*31*30

( 8 )

( 4 ) sorry it looks bad I hope you realize the are one big set of paranthesis.

Many teachers will accept this if not it is equal to

8 * 7 * ... (8 - 4) + 1

------------------------

4 * 3 * ... 1

Obviously the the ellipses are trivial here but the formula says multiple the top four number and divide by the bottom four:

8 * 7 * 6 * 5

---------------- = 70 ways to chose flowers

4 * 3 * 2 * 1

2.) 25 choose 6 or

(25)

( 6 ) = top 6 / bottom 6

25 * 24 * 23 * 22 * 21 * 20

------------------------------------ = 177100 ways to choose bbcards

6 * 5 * 4 * 3 * 2 * 1

3.) 34 choose 5

(34)

( 5 ) =

34 * 33 * 32 * 31 * 30

------------------------------ = 278256 ways to choose 5 mags

5 * 4 * 3 * 2 * 1

Check my math.

Hope this helps! :)
Reply:Previous poster is using the formula for permutations. You need the formula for combinations, which I'm sure is right in your book. SInce order doesn't matter, you have to correct for the fact that say rose, tulip, daisy, petunia is the same as petunia, tulip, daisy, rose.

The first one has 70 possibilities. Get your formula and figure out why.

Are these plants poisionous??

can anyone tell me if any of these plants are poisionous to pets and/or kids

1. peace lily

2. orange begonia

3. Hanging red verbena

4. pink ornamental grass

5. varigated philadandrian

Are these plants poisionous??
Yes if you digest and eat them of course.
Reply:The vetrenarians assoc. says any plant thats not an herb is poisonous in one way or another. If you want to keep house pets out of houseplants just sprinkle a little cayenne pepper around the base of the plant. They will smell it and leave it alone. If it hurt your pets I wouldnt tell you to do this (Im a pet owner/lover)

Cheers!
Reply:Not necessarily poisonous but they certainly won't do you any good and more than likely will make you sick.
Reply:5. varigated philodandren, is poisonious to animals, mainly cats. the others are not, as far as i know, and thats coming from about 4 years of botany experience
Reply:yea i think so

Want to identify two flowers?

The first one is I think a kind of a Begonia it never blooms and is a house plant. The second one is a very old plant came from my Grandmother's garden it's lilly like has white blooms that come out in late summer you would have to see a picture I can't describe it well enough, I have a pic.can I send it to some one. Pat J

Want to identify two flowers?
A begonia that never blooms...It could be an angel wing, which doesn't tend to bloom as prolifically (if at all, at times). Check the link below for more information on how to encourage it to bloom. Are the leaves shaped like regular begonias? There are three types of begonia: tuberous, rhizomous, and fibrous rooted. Can you tell which type of root system it has (without digging it up)? Are the leaves plain green or do they have some markings on them?

As for a white, old fashioned lily type flower...hmmm. Is it a spider lily, maybe? Definitely a picture would help. Lily of the Nile is old fashioned...white. Try looking at the links below and if that is not enough information, email me a pic. I'll help you look.

Happy Gardening!
Reply:Make sure you remember to fertilize your plants with one for flowering plants or they won't bloom. The begonia may need to be moved into a larger pot. The lily-like flower is probaly a lily. I have one blooming now. It has a lovely scent and the flowers are 5 in across! Try googling flower identification . there are several spots available.
Reply:try Rex Begonia on the house plant.... Phillipine lily on the white one.....

Next year, how long would it take for annuals that are 4 inches tall, to grow very wide, and largE?

I bought this little booklet about Annuals, and there is a colored flower bed with all annuals, like zinnia, begonia, sage, impatients, petunias, periwinkle, and african marigold. On the cover, the bed is very full, with no space in beween the flowers. It shows a step by step instructions on the side of the page on how to make it look exacly like the picture., and your supposed to plant the plants about 5 inches apart, and the flowers are still small when they are planted. How long would it take for them to be about a foot wide, and tall? When would I have to plant them next year? All the flowers in the pictures look very full. thanks.

Next year, how long would it take for annuals that are 4 inches tall, to grow very wide, and largE?
How long it takes for them to get bigger depends on the plant and growing conditions (weather, soil, season, etc). You would have to plant them after the fear of frost is gone, and they should continue to grow (size %26amp; height) until the cold weather comes in.

Annuals do not return year after year, so each spring you would need to go out and replant everything. If you are putting in a bed for the flowers I would suggest going with Perenials. Each year they will return and be larger until the reach their maximum size. You can add the annuals each spring to give you more color and blooms through out the seasons.
Reply:your looking at the very least 2 months.possibly all summer.it depends on the soil the light they get.and the fertilizer you use.you can get seeds from annuals when you deadhead the flower.make sure they are completely dry before storing them.then start them indoors,or wait untill the last frost to plant your seeds.

Fire ant killer?

I want to put down some Fire ant killer in my landscaping. As I was planting my begonia's I discovered some fire-ants. I bought some fire-ant killer, but I am worried if I put it down, it will hurt the other "critters" that are healthy for the soil, such as worms, grubs, etc. etc. Any ideas you have would be great!!

Fire ant killer?
Unfortunately, the fire ant killers you buy commercially may kill some of the other critters as well. But chances are the ants already took care of those in the proximity of their nest anyway. Just sprinkle the bait on and around the nest, the ants are a bigger issue then the other insects which may be affected by the poison. Most of the poisons / baits are designed to target those pesky fire ants to begin with. Get control of them now before they get into your house and areas that may be harder to control.

Good luck.
Reply:I'd contact your local exterminator and ask if the ant killer you bought is saft but effective. They'll probably give you the best answer.
Reply:Grits..good old fashioned grits! Non invasive for plants and fruit/veggies

Checkout the site below, there are quite a few flowers on these pages and the basic sun, shade, growing requirements for each
Reply:These sound like mostly annuals. They will have planting instructions on th etag that comes w/them. From what I know, most of these plants like sun.
Reply:Most of those like lots of sun- Lantana, Dusty Miller, Pentas, Marigolds,Diathus, Salvia Tomatoes, Petunias- and they don't need a lot of water.

The guy ahead of me said they were annuals but here in Calif. A lot of them are perrenials.

Help with a HW problem....?

A student read that plants require several essential elements for healthy growth and decided to fertilize his yellowing begonia. When he mixed the plant food, he made the solution 3 times as concentrated as the directions suggested. The next day his plant was not only yellow, but also wilted.

Can you help the student understand his error and suggest a remedy?????

Help with a HW problem....?
This is really quite easy. The error is in mixing the plant food at triple concentration. This is osmotically hyperconcentrated relative to the osmolality of the intracellular space of the plant's cells, causing water to be osmotically drawn out of the plant cells, causing wilting. This is like spilling too much granular fertilizer on your lawn, causing the grass in that area to die. The remedy is to apply huge amounts of pure water to reduce the osmolality of the soil moisture down to a level that can allow the plant cells to again be able to absorb water.
Reply:Adding too much food made the soil too acidic, so that the plant could no longer absorb Nitrogen. To restore the proper PH the soil should be flushed with water a few times a week to remove built up salts, and do not fertilize for awhile until the leaves return to a normal color.
Reply:I'd tell the student(and you)to study harder and take better notes in class
Reply:The plant food puts a greater concentration of hydrophilic material outside the plant than inside. Osmotic pressure will cause the water to move from inside the plant to outside, hydrating the plant food, and making the plant appear wilted.

He's going to have to overwater the plant to compensate (and maybe wash some excess plant food out the bottom of the flowerpot).

Your teacher won't want to hear this, but: begonias are delicate. Sorry, the plant's most likely going to die.

Annual flowers that can live in part sun/part shade?

My backyard is a mix of sun and shade. Full shade flowers like impatiens get to much sun there, while full sun flowers like putunia's and vinca's cant get enough sun. Other than begonia's are there any other compact type annual flowers that I could concider?

Annual flowers that can live in part sun/part shade?
I have the same dilemma as our garden faces west and gets the hotter afternoon sun. Impatients are my favorites, but the sun and heat is too much. Last year we tried the New Guinea Impatients with much sucess, we got so many compliments that we will be planting them again. Other low height annuals are Alyssum, and Dianthus which offers lots of reliable color that has also worked well in our, part sun/part shade garden.
Reply:Browallia grows in full or partial sun. The flowers are blue or white, and they brow to be 12 " to 15" in height. Maintenance is low. Coleus is good in shade, and the foliage is chartreuse, apricot, copper and bronze. Cosmos thrives in full to partial sun.

Try using Miracle Grow soil. It's not too expensive, and it feeds the flowers for 3 months. They bloom like crazy.
Reply:Some hostas thrive on part sun and shade and they come back prettier than ever
Reply:I have had great luck with petunias and marigolds - they are hardy, will handle the heat, and will make you smile everythime you look at them!

Ap bio plant help?

Theres a begonia (C3) sugarcane (C4) and a cactus (CAM).

The begonia and sugarcane die in that order but the cactus lived in a sealed container that received water and sunshine.

Why do those die and the cactus live? Thanks, i can't find this in my book anywhere !

Ap bio plant help?
First you have to know the differences between C3, C4, %26amp; CAM forms of Photosynthesis. And from there identify which plants have it, and then derive what are the advantages %26amp; disadvantages.

This website best defines %26amp; describes all 3 forms:

Help with this math question for my fifth graders?

I have no idea how the book is saying the answer is 27 plants. I keep getting 31. here is the word problem.

Ms. Black has one begonia plant. If she buys two begonia plants each year for every one she has, how many will she have in four years?

Explain!!

Help with this math question for my fifth graders?
In the first year there's 1 plant.

In the 2nd year: 1 + 2 = 3 plants

In the 3rd year: 3*2 + 3 = 9 plants

In the fourth year : 9*2 + 9 = 27 plants

assuming none of them die of course - let's hope Ms. Black has Green fingers!
Reply:Year one; 1 + 2 = 3

Year two; 3 + 6 = 9

Year three; 9 + 18 = 27

Year four; 27 + 54 = 81

I get 27 in year three.

If you start with one in year one, it works out to 27 in year four.
Reply:Step by step:

1st year: 1 plant

2nd year: 1 + 2*1 = 1 + 2 = 3 plants

3rd year: 3 + 2*3 = 3 + 6 = 9 plants

4th year: 9 + 2*9 = 9 + 18 = 27 plants

However from the question it sounds like she has 1 plant at the start, and she'll be buying 4 times. In that case just do it one more time. You get the answer after just three steps though.
Reply:in year 1 she has one plant

in year 2 she buys 2x1=2 plants, added to the 1 she has makes 3

in year 3 she buys 2x3=6 plants added to the 3 she has makes 9

in year 4 she buys 2x9=18 plants added to the 9 she has makes 27
Reply:If she buys 2 plants for every plant she already has and keeps the originals, that means she is effectively tripling the amount of plants she has every year. Starting from 1, after 4 years it would be 1*(3^3)=27
Reply:1 for the first year, 2 for every one added to existing amount

1 + 2 = 3 second year she has 3

3 + 6 = 9 third year she has 9

9 + 18 = 27 fourth year she has 27
