South Texas gardeners?

I live in San Antonio. Throughout the summer, most of my yard is in heavy, heavy shade. I love color but I'm tired of impatiens, begonias, caladiums, and coleus, and I don't have much luck with hostas. I'd also like to put in some perennials but don't have a lot to spend. Any suggestions? Or am I just out of luck? Thanks for any help.

South Texas gardeners?
Go to Rainbow Gardens on Bandera road (I think there is also one on 90 but I'm not sure) and ask them what to plant. they know everything about planting in the area and they have never recommended a plant that didn't work in my yard (I live out past Helotes).
Reply:Go to a couple of really good nurseries, look around, ask questions, and get ideas. You don't have to buy anything. I am certain you will end up with a new perspective and some grand ideas. :)

What's you're favorite "lyric to live by"?

A few nominees:

"One in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places, if you look at it right"

- Grateful Dead, Scarlet Begonias

"And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make"

What's you're favorite "lyric to live by"?
My favourites are Robbie Williams, "No Regrets":

"I didn't lose my mind - it was mine to give away" and

"Often I sit down and think of you for a while, then it passes me by and I think of someone else instead".

Madness "It must be love", which always makes me happy:

Also Enya "Only Time", for more reflective moments:

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day

You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.

Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town

Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.

You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.

And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.

No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.

So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking

Racing around to come up behind you again.

The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,

Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.

Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines

Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way

The time is gone, the song is over,

Thought I'd something more to say.

Last year, with the warm temperatures my garden was full of flowers and my tomato plants didn't stop producing fruit. This year the tomato plants have all turned black and there's not as much fruit on them as last year- I have read this year has been worst for 'blight' for tomatos and potatoes.

This year is the 1st year I have tried to grow my own veg. The peas, carrots and french beans all did well, as did lettuce and radish. Unfortunately my runner beans were eaten by slugs and snails before they really got going. For Bournemouth, Dorset (south coast of England) this year the weather has really taken it's toll on my garden.....maybe I'll have better luck next year! As I said - I am an experimental gardener!

So, I was visiting my Uncle Burt at the hospital the other night and realizing I'd forgotten the flowers, I...

...plucked some begonias from the hospital's entrance. "You shouldn't do that," growled the groundskeeper. I apologized then vaporized him. This caused the rest of the staff to run screaming out of the building, save for some young, impressionable candy-striper who had some kind of odd Dalek fetish. She suggested we retreat to the janitor's closet to "play Doctor".

"The Doc-TOUR is the ENEMY of the DAL-EKS" I reminded her.

"I love it when you talk like that, you big metal brute", she cooed.

2.5 rapturous minutes later, we were soaking in the afterglow, when she offered a post-coitus smoke. I declined. Instead, we found a big sheet of bubble wrap and a box of expired lightbulbs, which we went about popping and smashing.

THAT's when the custodian (who'd been sitting next to us this whole time, on his lunch break) told us we were in a veteran's hospital, and many were suffering relapses due to our antics.

That's when I remembered Uncle Burt!!

How do I keep bunny rabbits and squirrels out of my flower garden? They are digging holes and eating flowers.?

I have gerber daisies, caladium's, petunia's, geraniums, rose bushes and begonias.

How do I keep bunny rabbits and squirrels out of my flower garden? They are digging holes and eating flowers.?
Put up a fence around them. You can also make little "cages" out of chicken wire and put your bulbs into them before you plant them. The flowers grow right through them, but the animals can't eat them.

There is some kind of animal repellent you can sprinkle around the garden, but you would have to keep sprinkling it after it rains. I think you can stuff like that at any well-stocked nursery. Then there are things like motion-activated sprinklers you could set up too. Or put up a fake owl around your garden somewhere and the rodents should be scared off by it, you would have to move it from time to time so they don't realize that it's fake. You can find stuff like this at stores or on amazon.com
Reply:Put blood meal (found at nursery or home improvement store), it's not as gross as it sounds, it is just powder. Put a good amout round the base of the plants, but do not mix it in. For some reason the animals don't like it. You might have to replace it every so often if you notice them coming back.
Reply:Plant marigold's aroung them--like a little tiny orange wall. Bunnies don't like them.

House plants in apartment . Has my Green Thumb turned black w/age?

I have a pretty good sized apt. and love plants, used to have tons of them for years. Now I am having lots of failures. The only exposures available to me are North %26amp; West. I know that's part of my problem, easy plants like philodendrens, etc. do fairly well in North exposure, but I have two kitties who do a job on them, as they come and go in the front windows. I have 13 foot ceilings, can't think of an attractive way to use a full-spectrum light. West exposure is kitchen and bedroom with another tall apartment building next door, two large windows in kitchen, one in bedroom, but another tall apt. building right next door. Can anyone advise on plants like strawberry begonias and Wax plants (Hoyas) and the like? I believe hanging plants would be best, but have plaster walls and although I'm pretty good with a drill, I'm also short and can't see climbing that high. Thanks to any houseplant lovers!!

House plants in apartment . Has my Green Thumb turned black w/age?
try using a lamp or overhead lights. its a good way to get filtered light. this way you can put them any where you want.didn't get just what you were asking but I hope I've helped.
Reply:I have the best luck with succulents. They don't require too much of anything. I water them once a week and if I don't, they're still okay.
Reply:I like the succulents idea. "Japanese Jade" plants do well just about anywhere (not really "Japanese", buy the way - they're from South Africa).

But, I wonder if perhaps your plants are getting a fungus of some kind, either airborn or from white flies or aphids. Have you checked for that? Soil fungus can live in pots so changing potting soil alone may not solve a fungus or mold problem. Take a sample of soil or a wilted plant to your county agriculture office. They can usually tell right away and advise you.

Anyone know a recipe for homemade Fungicide?

My begonias have mold growing on the leaves and they are slowly dying. Anyone know of what I can do?

Anyone know a recipe for homemade Fungicide?
Trim away some of the leaves so air can get through. Make a spray with 2 T. baby shampoo and 1 T. baking soda in 1 gallon of warm water. Spray plants lightly once a week, being sure to get under the leaves, too. Hope this helps.
Reply:clear away dead and dying leaves

clear an air path between them and other plants

water them less

make sure there is no standing water near by

make sure dirt doesn't splash on them by mulching well

make sure the mulch isn't causing the dampness by keeping it about two inches from the main stem

You shouldn't use chemicals, just follow these directions and you should be able to save them.
Reply:Im sorry, i know this has nothing to do with Fungicide, but i wanted to talk to you about the South Beach diet. I saw your answer on another question, but didnt know any other way to reach you. You can contact me at your_veela_dream, if you dont mind. Looking forward to you IM. :)

I was wondering what color flowers would look the best with violet colored geraniums, and lavendar colored?

dianthus. Do you think either red, white, or pink begonias would look nicer? Also, are there any other kind of flowers that would look nice with these? The flowers have to like alot of sun.

I was wondering what color flowers would look the best with violet colored geraniums, and lavendar colored?
I think yellow is a nice bright color to add with the purple, that or orange.
Reply:pink begonias would be nice. Something dark royal purple sets off lavender well--petunias, for example, or verbena. White becopa or sweet alyssum is nice with lavender-colored plants, too.
Reply:Orange Gerberas

orange (sherbet) osteospermum

work well with purple

a booming red, red would make nice contrast. Can't go wrong with white.

post a pic of your artistry!
Reply:If you have a lot of sun (heat?) begonias may not work for you. I use a dark purple and lavender verbena, lavender trailing lantana, lavender yarrow, and then throw in some bright yellow calendula here %26amp; there. I also have some bright red petunias for a little extra color. We are zone 8, with summer temperatures averaging low to mid 90's to 3-4 weeks of 100 degrees. The plants I've named are in full sun and do great.
Reply:Actually, I'd suggest using the color from the opposite side of the color wheel--yellow. You might try adding some yellow and purple pansies, yellow or white irises or daylilies, Of the ones you've named, though, I'd go with the pink.

Area of a pentagon given radius.?

Question 1: A regular pentagon inscribed in a circle whose radius measures 9 inches. Find the area of the pentagon.

Question 2: A landscaper wants to plant begonias along the edges of a triangular plot of land in Winton Woods Park. Two of the angles of the triangle measure 95 degrees and 40 degrees. The side between these two angles is 80 feet long.

A. Find the measure of the third angle.

B. Find the length of the other two sides of the triangle.

What is the perimeter of this triangular plot of land?

Area of a pentagon given radius.?
1) Since the Pentagon can be divided into 5 equal triangles, and each of the angle opposite the sides of the pentagon is 360/5 = 72 degree.

Also, since each of the 5 triangles from the divided pentagon is an isoceles triangle (same 2 sides = radius), the 2 base angles are equal. Base angle = (180 - 72)/2 = 54.

Using Sine Law to calculate side of the Pentagon:

Side/sin(72) = radius /sin(54) = 9/sin(54)

Side = 10.58

Therefore each triangle has an area of:

= 0.5(side)(radius)sin(54) = 0.5(10.58)(9)sin(54)

= 38.52

Total area of Pentagon = 5 x 38.52 = 192.60

2) Use Sine Law:

The 3rd angle = 180 - 95 - 40 = 45 (A)

Since 80 is the side opposite the 45 degree angle above

80/sin(45) = side1/sin(95)

side1 = 112.7

80/sin(45) = side2/sin(40)

side 2 = 72.7

Perimeter = 80+112.7+72.7 = 265.4
Reply:This is right out of my Pre calculus book helps a lot though Report It

Reply:1)So regular pentagon inscribed in a circle.

Immediately you know those 5 sides are equal. Radius is 9 inches. Therfore if you divide the pentago into 1 triangle and 1 trapezoid. So the triangle will have a base of diameter length and the trapezoid will have a base of diameter length as well.

Also, a pentagon has 5 sides so to find the total degrees you use (n-2) times 180

n represents the number of sides

total is 540 degrees divided by 5 give 108 degrees for each angle

Now the triangle you have now is an isosceles triangle with a base of 18 inches and 2 equal base angles of 30 degrees

to find one of the sides of the pentagon you would use

A/Sin A=B/Sin B

A is a side you want to know and A is opposite angle

B is the side you know (18 inches) and B is opposite angle

A/Sin 30=18/Sin 120

A=10.39

Area of Pent=1/2(perimeter)(radius/opatholem) I don't know if thats the right spelling

Area=233.78 sq inches

2)

A.

Angle1=95 deg

Angle2=40 deg

Angle 3 therefore=45deg (180 deg-total of 2 known angles)

B.

Side1=80 feet

A/SinA=B/SinB

80/Sin45=B/Sin40

B=72.72 feet

Now the 3rd side needs to be found which is C

A/SinA=C/Sinc

80/Sin45=C/Sin95

C=112.71

So perimeter is 265.43 feet.
Reply:split the pentagon into 5 equal triangles

Then the area of one triangle is

1/2(radius^2)(sin360/5degrees)

or 1/2(r^2)(sin72)

= 81/2(sin72)

= 38.51778891

so area pentagon = 192.59 square inches

As the two known angles add to 135, then the third angle is 45 degrees.

B. If you use the sine rule then one side = 80(sin95)/sin(45)

and the other is 80(sin40)/sin45

I make the perimeter 265.43 feet.

This is all about carrots! Why do Possums moles and rabbits eat my carrots?

I've put up a wire fence, but moles dig under it, and some jackrabbits..sheesh! they just jump the fence with their big

I have an idea. Get some old tires off of grandpas tractor (clean the grease off) and lay them in the garden on top of some hardware cloth. Fill them up with soil and plant your carrots in them. Get some more chicken wire and either make your fence taller, or give it a wire roof. Voila! carrots are protected from below and from above!

How to take care of some flowers?

I have some flower. They are in my very sunny balcony. There is no other place that i can put them. Some of them had a kind of white cotton-looking stuff on them. Especially my begonias. And their leaves and flowers are getting fade. Also my hortensia (is that the right name for it - i don't know) has that white stuff on it. How can i get rid of those?

I have an azalea, too. That one is going away, i can see that, the leaves are falling. I thing i gave it a lot water:/ Are there anything to be done?

Thank you guys...

How to take care of some flowers?
Does this look like powder on your plants? If so, you may have "powdery mildew". It's a fungus that is infectious and it sounds as though the conditions on your balcony are perfect for it. Here's an article with more info and solutions:

http://www.angelfire.com/rings/ladypp/po...

You may also have gray mold. Here's a terrific website with pics for identifying and treating your plants:

http://www.planetnatural.com/site/xdpy/k...

Both of these conditions are contagious. If you have any healthy plants on the balcony, move them immediately. It sometimes helps to remove diseased leaves, but be sure to wash your hands after pinching off affected areas. This stuff spreads really, really easily.

I hope this helps!

Check the soil to see if it needs water. Use a moisture meter and stick it an inch or so into the ground or use your finger and check the soil in different areas about an inch down. If it is dry then water. Over-watering will kill them just like under-watering will. They are annuals (I assume - don't know where you are) so they will need more water than perennials (shallower roots) however you can still overdo it. Occasionally checking the soil is your best bet.
Reply:When you first plant them you should water them a lot. After they start to get fuller you should water them once or twice a week. If you add plant food it should help them grow full. There pretty easy you should be fine. Good luck.
Reply:Are you fertilizing when you're watering? If so, you might be using the wrong kind of fertilizer. Try switching to a blooming plant food (the ratio of N P and K are different than the regular kind. ) I would cut back on watering as much. If you have fast draing ing soil (like sand or something really loamy) try watering every other day. something slower draining...every two - three days..and cut back on watering when it rains.

azalea

I'd like to put a planter on my porch this year - but it will get full shade. What plants can I use?

I know there are a few plants that prosper in shade areas (impatients, hostas, begonias) but most planters seem to have an interesting combination of heigh, color and texture that I seem unable to achieve with the limited varieties of shade plants I can find. Can anyone offer some suggestions?

I'd like to put a planter on my porch this year - but it will get full shade. What plants can I use?
You could plant some ferns (they come in many different heights and textures) among some begonias. They would contrast off each other well.

Good Luck!
Reply:there are a number of varieties of Coleus. it does nicely in shady areas..
Reply:asparagus's fern ,for draping downward, impatiens ,many colors to choose from, and coleus for height.
Reply:Can't beat the aspidistra for survival in those conditions and has big green leaves that always look good. If not on its own it makes an impact even when planted with other choices.
Reply:You also can use geraniums and I have used verbania quite successfully. I also have used the wave petunias. You can put in some spike greens for the needed height.

My bulbs have bugs. What do I need to use that won't kill my plants?

I have several flowers and shrubs (marigolds, hydrageas, azaleas, roses, black eyed susans ect.) and none of them have signs of bugs; but yet my dahlias, begonias, and my camassias are very much infested. Does anyone have a clue as to what bugs eat only bulbs, and what I can use to kill them without killing my bulbs or the other flowers that won't cost me much?

My bulbs have bugs. What do I need to use that won't kill my plants?
BEGONIA INSECT PROBLEMS

Thrips cause irregular, reddish brown lines, in the upper

sides of the leaves. On the undersides of the leaves,

rusty brown spots form along the main veins. The insects

cause the undersides of leaves to become silvery and the

leaves may be deformed.

Mealybugs look like white puffs of cotton. They suck

plant juices and heavy infestations will coat the leaves

with sticky honeydew. Use house plant insect sprays

according to label directions.

Mites are very small and are hard to see without a

magnifying glass. Heavy infestations can cover the leaves

with very fine webbing. The plants gradually lose their

green color and appear dusty or speckled. Use a house

plant insect spray according to label directions.

Aphids suck plant juices and are usually found at the stem

tips. A heavy infestation will coat the leaves with

sticky honeydew. A black, sooty mold can grow on the

honeydew. The insects can be green, white, pink, or

black.

Whitefly is named for the adult, a small, white fly. The

immature whitefly is a small, almost translucent scale-like

insect. This insect is hard to control. Use a house plant

spray especially formulated for whitefly.
Reply:Slugs could be the culprit. Try seven dust, it will kill just about all pest infestations. I'm not sure it's sake around pets, however.
Reply:are you sure it's a bug and not a disease or a fungus? What color is the "bug"?

If your state allows the sale of live ladybugs, buy a couple of bags at Home Depot or a garden store. The ladybugs eat a lot of different kind of pests, they work much better than sprays and they are eco-friendly.
Reply:Take a bunch of cigarette butts and put them in a large jar of water. Let it sit for a day or so. Scrape out the butts, and spray your plants with the nasty water brown water.
Reply:try a sugary substance like soda or beer
Reply:mix water with alcohol and put it in a spray bottle and spray lightly every 3 days
Reply:Plain water %26amp; dish soap in a spray bottle.

Lemon juice %26amp; dish soap in a spray bottle.

Neem oil.

Sevin dust.
Reply:A garlic spray , a pepper spray, orange oil, most plant nursery's sell organic sprays like the Garlic etc. it won't kill the bugs but will stop them.
Reply:You may have Thrips. You can buy a powdered insecticide at your local garden store. Dust it on the bulbs. Ib you buy any new bulbs be sure to inspect them closely for bugs before taking them home.
Reply:Use an insecticide that doesn't affect plants you can check on the bottle it'll say.

Why is it appropriate for people to walk on grass?

Grass is a plant, just like flowers. Why do people walk on it, but they freak out when their roses or begonias or whatever are stepped on? Why doesn't walking on grass damage it as much as it would to any other plant, like a flower?

Why is it appropriate for people to walk on grass?
I guess...

I hate it when I send the kids to go get the mail, because..... yes you guessed it. They walk on the grass ( shortcut ).

The patch is so ugly now, I spend so much time trying to recover that every year.
Reply:ok, flowers look pretty, but they are generally pretty fragile. they are pretty, they are for looks.

grass is pretty darn plain... boring even. and suprisingly resilent. you have to walk on the same spot often to start to kill it off.

this is just my humble opinion, but i think grass is around your house because it is soft, cool, and meant to be enjoyed. it there is a place where a path is starting to wear, put in a row of stepping stones, but the rest of it should be enjoyed by tired feet and relaxers. if it didnt feel so nice, we would just pave everything so we wouldnt have to mow, and have flower boxes neatly on top
Reply:Because they are two distinct types of plants. They have totally different properties. Like mice and Gorillas.

If you took a machine and mowed down roses like you do grass they would die. Grass is just that ,grass. It is ok to walk on because in can take it. Grass is only slightly stressed but it will survive.

Is this a trick question ? =)
Reply:Grass is an overabundance - it's everywhere.

They grow without a lot of work, apart from when it's very dry out and ends up being crunchy.

Flowers actually look nice and take more time and care to handle.
Reply:Grass can tolerate the abuse and it will also grow back when damaged try that with a flower and see what happens to it.
Reply:There are grass varieties that are specifically bred to be walked on and/or used for sporting activities.
Reply:Walk barefoot on roses? No thanks!

My "Flowers" were violated, is it better now?
Why would anyone want to violate such lovely flowers, planted in such a beautiful poem? I like the way your personify the petunias and dianthus: "thinking they're the prettiest" and the gazania: "the stubborn one."
Reply:Well, I have no botanical knowledge, but I do have some poetical knowledge, and just let me say that you have blown this out of the park. The rewrite has a little more of a dancing flow then the first, but all throughout both of them I could see the flowers smiling, the vibrant personalities matching the vibrant colors. You know how to bring a garden to life, in both senses.
Reply:Violated? Deleted?

I love walking thru a flower garden...and that's exactly what I'm doing now, with the help of this wonderful poem...the birds are on the paths too, singing. No sun, but flowers are just as beautiful without it...Good Morning!
Reply:Gazania is the stubborn one, not liking the prairie at all. I had some luck with them in pots. Gaillardia (Indian Blanket Flower) is wild in Oklahoma. I had a nice patch that were perennial in Northern Missouri.
Reply:Wow, you've worked and reworked it!!! I think it's great....stop working on it!!!! It's fine the way it is!!!! You've brought it to life and it is like a garden to my eyes, I can see each flower like it is before me in bold color and bloom!!!! Your talent astounds me!!!
Reply:Thanks for re-posting! :)
Reply:I could feel it and smell each bloom thanks....
Reply:Great concept..good language..nice rhymes...very sweet poem. Move on trying.
Reply:Reenie, I am honored by the go-go reference to orange. What strange effects I have on many! lol

To give you a look at your words in a different light I have taken the liberty of rewriting some of them. I usually try to tighten lines by keeping beats somewhat close. Sometimes one also needs transition words to help flow. Is it better than yours? No. It is just my interpretation.

Cover my plants?

I have some begonias, petunias, verbena, violas and pansies outside. As well as a few coleus. I live in Indiana and the temps up here have been in the 60s %26amp; 70s for the past two weeks with the nighttime temps not falling below 40. Well, tonight, it is supposed to fall to 37. Is it safe just to leave these plants alone or should I toss something over them?

Cover my plants?
37 isn't below freezing and it should only drop for a few hours so you are probably pretty safe leaving them alone.

Cover up - if you just don't wanna chance it. Any frost could potentially "burn" the leaves.
Reply:I also live in Indiana. I hear it is suppose to be down to near the freezing mark Monday morning (I think). As long as it doesn't frost your plants should be ok. The pansies and violas will be fine even if we do get a light frost. The coleus, begonias, and petunias I would cover if there is a chance of a frost. 37 degrees shouldn't be a problem especially if the flowers are close to the house. If it reaches to the lower 30's I would cover them just to be sure.
Reply:one trick we use in Texas near Houston on nights that are cold and near freezing we water the plants heavily just before the frost a heavy watering will help protect them where coveing them with a sheet hurts them by the weight of the sheet or plastic which will break the flowers and the stems
Reply:Glad to see you're so conscientious about those plants. You don't want to waste the work you've put into them so far so I would cover them gently. Nobody likes frostbite (except Bullwinkle the Moose in Frostbite Falls).

The Muse
Reply:The old saying ....Better be safe than sorry...it takes more effort to type on the net than it does to just cover the darn things!!!!
Reply:toss something over them because you never know!!
Reply:I'd throw a sheet over them, just to be safe.
Reply:i am not a real garden person but i think you should take them out just in case
Reply:We had the same condition in N.C. last week, I just put old sheets over everything just to make sure and all was fine.

Anyone think alot of the classic songs are good?

Examples:

Jimmy Buffett is my favorite singer/songwriter/author, and he is, to me, overall, a good singer and songwriter. He has gotten better with his songwriting, but his singing is alot better before he became famous. The following songs are the ones I find really good:

-Coming Down Slow/High Cumberland Jubilee

-Hang out Gang (he didnt have a tag, yall!)

-Travelin Clean

-Truckstop salvation (acoustic solo at near end, that rocks!)

-In the shelter

-High Cumberland Dilemma (same beat as first song!!)

-One of the newer songs, on License to Chill: Scarlet Begonias!!! (that song was... wow... I really like it!)

-Christian (its a he** of a time to be thinkin... about heaven)

-Rockefeller Square (the underground world dont fill a millionaire!

Can anyone list any others?

Anyone think alot of the classic songs are good?
Billy Joel. Not much of a voice, really, but excellent at putting music and lyrics together for some great songs.
Reply:Many of these ppl are underrated and overlooked. I am 17 and my favorite singer is Tina Turner!!!

Ike and Tina had some good music, but no one gave them a chance. And they still dont because of the abusive situation Tina had to endure. Many kids today dont appreciate classic music.

Beyonce wants to be Tina Turner

Neyo tried in one song to be Prince

But no one give credit to these ppl...

Its a sad world out there

Soil is low?

I have a strip about 20 feet long, about 2 feet wide where my flowers and shrubbery grow. Yesterday, I notice a bulb on top of the soil and I noticed that there are spots where the soil is very low. My question is, what should I use to fill in these spots? Can I just spread potting soil? Will I need to fertilize the soil? After I add soil, how long should I wait before I plant anything in that area? I have begonias in that area and I need to add more. I do appreciate any and all tips/advice.

Soil is low?
Potting soil, used compost, top soil ,woodbark or leafmould will all serve to level the soil.Scatter Growmore granular fertiliser at 2 oz; to the sq;yd; and rake in lightly.

By the time it's warm enough to plant out begonias, the soil should have settled.
Reply:You can buy compost or potting soil with fertilizer already in it and have your soil and fertilizer in one. Some sewage treatment plants sell a fertilzer made from sludge and it is best for use on non-eating gardens like yours (not for vegetables). It is cheap and very fertile. Place that and some mulch and then put the plants through the mulch.

My mom needs help with her plants?

My mom is a newcomer to plants and she's surprised that some plants she bought are blooming so beautifully. She has begonias and a plant called coleus that she has planted in some flower boxes in the yard. First, they're outgrowing the flower boxes and she doesn't know how to take care of them for the fall and winter since we live in the midwest. What care does she need to take with them for the winter or will they just die and she just has to get new one's next year? Thanks.

My mom needs help with her plants?
I can tell you more about the coleus. It gets killed in frost and I'm sure there is a lot of that in the midwest! I would snip off some tips of the plants, and stick them in some water to root, then you'll have fresh ones to plant next year!

How to root them!

http://www.thegardenhelper.com/cuttings....

The begonias are sometimes a rhizome (rooty looking thing) and you can dig that up I think. Check out this website....

http://www.solutions.uiuc.edu/content.cf...

Anywho, good luck planting!
Reply:My begonias come back year after year. As for the coleus, this is the 1st year that I have planted it. So I don't know anything about it. I will take some of it and root it and place in my greenhouse just in case it doesn't come back next year.
Reply:Coleus and begonia can not survive frost she needs to dig them out and re pot them they both will grow indoors over the colder months If left out she will have to buy new ones have her bring them in and she can try her hand at an inside garden Coleus likes some shade indoors and begonias will love a bright sunny location water as needed
Reply:I don't know about the Coleus but the Begonias will come back. After they have died down before it gets snow and everything, pile leaves and pine straw on top of the flower beds. Then when Spring comes and there is no more heavy frosts take the leaves off. They will come up through a light mulch. Just use a heavy mulch during the very cold months.
Reply:the fun thing with those two plants is rooting them over the winter. Bring them inside and break off some stems and put them in water and they'll root. Keep doing it to any stem that gets tall. Then you can start putting them in pots. by next summer you could have a hundred or more ready to go back outdoors.
Reply:Both of those plants need to be brought in for the winter;

Coleus will root in water if you cut some stems

and then plant them in pots

begonias are tender too, so she can transplant them in pots and bring them in

Pancreatitis in Dogs (my puppy's count is 798?!)?

My 10 month old Jack Russell Terrier is very sick. Her initial symptoms were vomiting and bloody diarrhea, she tested negative for parvo at emergency vet's (Monday), they gave her antibiotics and anti nausea injections. Took her to regular vet (Tuesday AM), she was put on bland diet (rice, potatoes, etc) and continued vomiting. Yesterday (Wednesday AM) she was extremely dehydrated so we took her back to vet, put her on IV and did bloodwork.

Her Pancreatic enzymes(?) were 798 and her WBC is very very low.

I know she ate a lot of Easter scraps, but I don't think that explains why she is so sick! Could she have been poisoned or injested something that could have done this to her?

We just planted an Encore Azalea and begonias, but I don't think she ate any of it, but I really can't say for certain.

The vet can't explain her low white blood cell count, or why her pancreas count is so high! Can you help??

Pancreatitis in Dogs (my puppy's count is 798?!)?
Does the dog drink a lot or urinate a lot? Did the vet check for diabetes? My dog's count was over 1000 she was diagnosed a diabetic 3 yrs ago is on insulin and is well controlled. I'd have the vet do a glucose curve.

How do I get rid of Gnomes?

I was in my garden lastnight and I swear I saw a gnome eating my begonias, what do I do?

How do I get rid of Gnomes?
I had a similar problem once... here's what I did...

I went to the local car rental agency and rented a medium sized pickup truck. I drove home very carefully. Once I got to my house, I sat in the truck in the dark section of the street with the truck running but the lights off.. When the gnomes came out, I fired up the truck and mounted the curb at high speed... it took about three passes across my lawn to get them all but I was successful. I ran the wee buggers down and tossed them in the back. I took the truck to the u-spray-it carwash and cleaned her up. I dumped the squished gnomes in the Walmart trash box out back and returned the truck. Surprisingly, not one cop ever showed up... ever... I got away with it...

Reply:Welcome them and encourage them. They'll help your garden to grow if you make friends.
Reply:Well, gnomes don't eat begonias. Like us, they prefer fresh dandelions and other greens to make salads with. Perhaps your gnome was just collecting some to make a fresh boquet. Always try to be courteous to any gnomes you come across, they can be very helpful and life long friends. Share and share alike when it comes to the gardening. For additional information, I highly highly recommend "Gnomes" by Wil Huygen. It's an invaluable reference tool.
Reply:It depends if it is the traveling kind...
Reply:Call the gnome patrol and lay off the acid for a couple of weeks! Good luck
Reply:Um try putting gargoyles in your garden, they'll scare the gnomes away.

Do you like flowers?

The pansies are planted, smiling at me

Impatiens are waiting

I hear them whining

"Hey! We wanna be first!"

Colesia with plumes of bright happy red

Snap dragons in white are a must

Blue lobelia rounds it out nicely

My tribute to America

Go-go orange begonias are in

They used to be called "non-stop" (orange)

Accompanied by allysum so sweet

In baskets near the windows

Dianthus and petunias will wait til tomorrow

Nemesia and gazania

Have yet to be found

There's plenty of time though, time for a beer!

In re-posting this I see where some improvements can be made. Suggestions/comments welcome!

Good morning!

I have a feeling granny will want more dialogue......right?

Do you like flowers?
Is TD hiding behind me, working my strings? I think not.

You could have said Busy Lizzies for Impatiens (are they called that in USA?), but, although I don't know what a lot of these flowers look like that isn't a problem for me....what is the problem is you gave the pansies, and the impatiens characters - and then sort of let that slide.

The rhythm of the piece needs some work - I think I know why.

When you mention a flower, there isn't much you can do to make it fit rhythmically into a line.

With a poem such as this, I think you might like to try using iambic pentameters, which is stressed and unstressed beats

.

Colesia with plumes of bright happy red - is written in iambic pentameters.

I will e-mail you.

ps - I have to admit TD is right, too - you have a rich, expressive vocabulary - but it doesn't show here.
Reply:Yes, Granny will want more. She'll want more common names like 'Pinks' instead of Dianthus, 'Cockscomb' instead of Celosia. She will then go after some of your adjectives and adverbs, claiming that you have grown as an artist and should start using more complex terms like 'jubilant' instead of happy and 'reticent' instead of waiting.

That's what she'll say, alright.
Reply:You make me smile. I have a brown thumb...pretty much when it comes to anything, gardening included. I can also crash computers merely by being there, and injure myself in the most ridiculous and innocuous situations. Seriously, a concussion from running into a streetlamp while rollerblading (true story). What's a girl to do, but sit back and enjoy the green thumbs of others, and their marvelous poetry. Thanks, Reenie.
Reply:beautiful poem BUT where are our roses --the king of flowers--- may not be in usa but we call it so in india.it shows you are positive by nature ,naturally lover of gardens and early riser.------am i correct. if you feal so then do email me your liking of my comments wish you all the best.

with kind regards
Reply:I do love flowers and I do love your poem. Any room in there for Queen Ann's Lace. The "old timey" flower that I love and can't seem to fine around here. I had it once and after a couple of years it did not come back. I suppose I will have to order the seeds for a distant company. I love it and so do butterflies!!!

Great work Reenie!

Reply:Yes. Too bad I can't plant right now. I am sure you will find the right words and your poetry will be refined. I am pleased to know someone with the ability to express your thoughts well. Hopefully, our new place will accomadate the Cypress Vine I was looking forward to planting.
Reply:I am still going to Dairy Queen to ask for a "go-go orange"! Sounds like the person that named that flower was left over from the sixties! Little early for a beer isn't it? Yes, I do like the poem.
Reply:I gotta suggestion! Gimme a BEER!!!!!

Really, put this one away for a few days. When you look at it again, you will see the way to 'better' it. BUT, if you want suggestions.......
Reply:i like flower very very very much
Reply:I love flowers.
Reply:i love all type of flowers casue i love nature and what it has to offer.
Reply:I loved the first one....you just continue to improve....don't be so hard on yourself....talent is a virtue.......

The outro to "Bring The Noise" by Anthrax & P.E.?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoLkaGcpJ...

ok, listen to the beat/drums in the outro to that song... I've heard this same beat in a handful of other songs, including a song by Sublime, "Scarlet Begonias". (this is the same beat, just slower)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCVoqpKqf...

Why was this beat so popular? These are not the only songs I've heard it in, FYI.

Excuse me if I seem a bit slow, but I'm not a big fan of rap so I'm pretty clueless.

Annuals to plant in a bed? Washington DC area , mix sun/shade.?

I plant annuals in a bed in my front yard each year. We alternate between planting begonias and impatiens. I would like to do something more interesting this year - like a mix of flowers. Any ideas of what mix of flowers goes well together? I have a white house with green shutters.

Any color will go with your white house. How about red salvia, marigolds or geraniums?
Reply:Hi:

You have a wonderful setting for annual flowers with base colors of green and white. I am a landscaper and designer and you can do a variety of plants. I will link you to the gallery of plants section of my website. I have a page on annual flowers that may give you some ideas. Here are some more suggestions for you:

Coleus is a great accent to annual flowers

Cosmos

Dusty Miller is also a great accent

Geranium

Marigolds

Petunia

Ornamental grass is another accent

Daisies

These are just a few. Check around the D.C. area in nurseries and garden centers, and they should provide you with a good supply for your gardens. Good luck to you. I will also link you to the Site Map, as this page has everything that is on the website. Browse through and see if is any other information that will help you with your gardens. Have a great day!

Reply:You can add torenias, violas, impatiens and caladiums to your choices.
Reply:Pansies, petunias, dianthus, verbena and daisies are a few good choices. Verbena and petunias look pretty together in contrasting colors, my fave is red and purple. Geraniums, coleus, and marigolds are colorful.

When to start planting outdoors in Central Virginia??

I live in Central Virginia, and I am very, very eager to get out there and start planting!! I've put some pansies and begonias out and they're doing well. I am potting an herb garden, and some daisies, random flowers, and veggies. What if I potted them, brought them outside during the day and in at night until the end of April? Or is the beginning of May better? Please help before I run and stick everything in the ground tomorrow- haha.

Wow, you've got the gardening bug bad! Me too.

We both have to wait until the last frost date, mine in April 14th. Go here for your date:

Gardening in the NE US?

I am thinking way ahead for my gardens next year. I would like some reccomendations from people living and gardening in the North East (southern New England) on some hardy plants. I would like to know some good species for a butterfly/hummingbird garden. I already have a few plants that attract them: butterfly bush, zinnias, salvia, daises, coral bells, lavender, begonias and a bleeding heart. These are the plants that I have seen the butterflies and hummingbirds on. I would like to expand the garden and attract more and different species throughout the spring, summer and early fall. I would also like reccommendations for evergreens, preferably with berries or leaves that change colors (to red in fall, for example) and some reccommendations for good cutting plants. I know that's alot, thank you in advance!

Gardening in the NE US?
Try some evening primrose. Hummingbirds come to the yellow flowers and the rosette turns red in the fall.

They spread but are very easy to remove.
