My mom needs help with her plants?

My mom is a newcomer to plants and she's surprised that some plants she bought are blooming so beautifully. She has begonias and a plant called coleus that she has planted in some flower boxes in the yard. First, they're outgrowing the flower boxes and she doesn't know how to take care of them for the fall and winter since we live in the midwest. What care does she need to take with them for the winter or will they just die and she just has to get new one's next year? Thanks.

I can tell you more about the coleus. It gets killed in frost and I'm sure there is a lot of that in the midwest! I would snip off some tips of the plants, and stick them in some water to root, then you'll have fresh ones to plant next year!

The begonias are sometimes a rhizome (rooty looking thing) and you can dig that up I think. Check out this website....

Reply:My begonias come back year after year. As for the coleus, this is the 1st year that I have planted it. So I don't know anything about it. I will take some of it and root it and place in my greenhouse just in case it doesn't come back next year.
Reply:Coleus and begonia can not survive frost she needs to dig them out and re pot them they both will grow indoors over the colder months If left out she will have to buy new ones have her bring them in and she can try her hand at an inside garden Coleus likes some shade indoors and begonias will love a bright sunny location water as needed
Reply:I don't know about the Coleus but the Begonias will come back. After they have died down before it gets snow and everything, pile leaves and pine straw on top of the flower beds. Then when Spring comes and there is no more heavy frosts take the leaves off. They will come up through a light mulch. Just use a heavy mulch during the very cold months.
Reply:the fun thing with those two plants is rooting them over the winter. Bring them inside and break off some stems and put them in water and they'll root. Keep doing it to any stem that gets tall. Then you can start putting them in pots. by next summer you could have a hundred or more ready to go back outdoors.
