Are begonias perinnials (sp?)?

I was given begonias in a hanging basket and they don't seem really happy--maybe root bound. I am wondering if I can plant them in the ground and they will come back every year?

Are begonias perinnials (sp?)?
Depends on where you live. I suggest taking a few cuttings, placing them in a glass of water near a window sill. You'll have new potted plants in no time!--OK, about 8 weeks.

Then you can experiment with putting your old ones outside. They'll need lots of water!

Remember to let roots fill up glass before potting, as begonias need well-established root systems to transplant w/o being shocked too badly.

Have fun with it!

Each year we create a science project from our garden. My children really enjoy making predictions and then watching to see which ideas work and which do not. Last year it was potatoes started from eyes indoors.

This year was potatoes grown in straw without soil--they both were fascinating projects %26amp; we have lots of french fries, baked, boiled, lol you get the idea!

Reply:It depends upon where you live but mostly not. Begonias are very susceptible to mildew and root rot. The likelihood that they are root bound is very slim- if they are not performing as they should 1)gently wash the leaves with a mildew remover from your local nursery

2) check soil to assure it is damp, not wet,

3) fertilize.

Remember these plants would rather have partial shade.

They can be ground planted for a beautiful summer display!
Reply:Because begonias are prone to rot if left in the ground until their tops fall, bringing them indoors before the frost, is recommended.

Good Luck
Reply:No, they are not.

If you do not bring them inside, it is recommended that you dig up the bulbs at the end of the summer and keep them in a warm, dry place over the winter, then replant them in the spring after the last frost.
